Dieser tektonische außerordentlich bedeutsame Kalkstein-Höhenzug zwischen Lengerich und Lienen gehört zu einem über 100 km langen Ausläufer der in das nordwestliche Tiefland hineinziehenden Mittelgebirgsschwelle, die die münsterländische Bucht im Norden begrenzt. Waldmeister- Buchenwälder, bei denen es sich meist um durchgewachsene Niederwälder handelt und die in verschiedenen Bereichen große Orchideenbestände aufweisen, bedecken zusammen mit Fichtenparzellen die Hänge und Kammlagen. Mehrere naturnahe Quellbäche entspringen auf dem südexponierten Hang. Kalk-Halbtrockenrasen, die durch ihren Reichtum an Orchideen und anderen Blütenpflanzen besonders im Frühjahr ein buntes Bild bieten und eine Vielzahl von Insekten aufweisen, sowie Kalksümpfe und Kalktuffquellen mit seltenen Pflanzengesellschaften sind weitere zusätzliche schutzwürdige Lebensräume in stillgelegten und zum Teil schon sehr alten Steinbrüchen.
