English: Tenzin Tsundue, a Tibetan writer and activist popularly known as ‘the man with red band’, born and brought up in India, began an initiative called ‘Walk A Mile for Tibet’ in Mcleodganj, Dharamshala on 12th February 2021 on the occasion of Losar (Tibetan New Year).Tsundue walked from Mcleodganj to Delhi covering more than 500 kms in a bid to raise awareness regarding the Tibet issue and urging the Indian government to repeal its One-China Policy. This one man march continued for almost a month with Tsundue reaching Delhi on 10th March which is celebrated as the Tibetan National Uprising Day. Duirng the campaign, he listed five reasons for why India must repeal its One China policy. The first reason he cited was moral in nature. His argument was that it is morally not right for any country to support the oppressor and not the oppressed. Therefore, India should repeal one China policy to call upon expansionist policy of China. The second reason was that one China policy has not been beneficial for India as well. While India accepts the policy of not intervening in China’s internal matters, contrary to this China has repeatedly shown intrusive tendencies by staking claims on Indian territory. Therefore, the policy is not just morally wrong but also against interest of India. Third, India’s recognition of Tibet as a part of China in 1954 led to the transition of historic Indo-Tibet border into Sino-India border. This culminated in elimination of Tibet as a buffer zone between India and China. Subsequently, the border which was marked by peace as Tibet and India were allies was taken over by an antagonistic relationship between neighbouring states. The other concern raised by Tsundue was huge portion of India’s budget spent on military and securing borders.Owing to repeated aggressive advances made by People’s Republic of China, India has to spend humungous amounts from budget to secure its border. India will be in a position to reduce its expenditure on military front and divert the funds on national development if Tibet becomes a buffer zone yet again. Lastly, Tenzin Tsundue mentioned that just like China provides covert support to Pakistan and is using Belt and Road Initiatives and String of Pearls to encircle India, India must also retaliate by rejecting the One China Policy and recognising Tibet as an independent nation.
