Summary edit

Description
English: A panel of the historical frieze in the Hall of Heroes of the Voortrekker Monument, Pretoria. In this panel, the 2nd of 27, a Bible which is currently in the Cenotaph Hall exhibit, is presented by Thomas Philipps (left, but see note), on behalf of the British settlers of Grahamstown and its vicinity to voortrekker Jacobus J. Uys (1770/71–1838, at right).[1] The handover took place ca.20 April 1837 at an outspan (lay-by for wagons) just outside Grahamstown, where the Bible Monument / 33.29833°S 26.49806°E / -33.29833; 26.49806 is currently located. The Graham's Town Journal reported on the ceremony on the 27th. The 27 panels in Quercetta marble[2] portray scenes from the Trekker departure from the Colony's frontier districts in 1835, to the signing of the Sand River Convention in 1852.
Note: It is accepted that while William Rowland Thompson (1797‒1871) delivered the address at the occasion, it was Thomas Philipps (1776‒1859) who presented the Bible. Yet the gifter depicted at left is W.R.T., and is based on a photograph that was available to the sculptor. T. Philipps was Justice of Peace in Grahamstown and first master of the Masonic Albany Lodge, founded in 1828. W. R. Thompson was one of Grahamstown's seven commissioners appointed in 1837, and was technically not its "mayor".
