ce. Allthe villages we passed through were again deserted, but we heard the enemy crying out to one anotherin the forest and jungle, telling each other ofour whereabouts. We expected an attack, andI often nearly mistook the screeches and criesof cockatoos and parrots and the loud, curiouscall of the birds of paradise for some distantwar-cry, which was quite excusable, consideringthe state of our nerves and the sleepless nightwe had spent. We found the tide high, so we took o£E ourboots and waded most of the way, and in timearrived at a creek up which the sea was rushingin and out with great violence. We were helpedover by police on each side of us, who half draggedus across, otherwise we should have been washedoff our legs, so great was the suction. I was veryfond of these strong, plucky, good tempered andainusing P
