Description
English: Ekadashi is inextricably linked with Dnyaneshwar, the great saint of Maharashtra. About twenty days before Ekadashi, Dnyaneshwar Maharaj's paduka is put in a palanquin from Alandi and taken to Pandharpur along with Dindi. Those who participate in this Dindi are called Warkari.Vaarkari Ektari and Taal, overwhelmed with devotion to Vitthala, Tukoba to the beat of cymbals, Abhang Gaat of Dnyaneshwar, carry the palanquin on their shoulders to Pandharpur. Garlands of tulsi are placed around the neck and odor is applied to the forehead. On the day of Ekadashi, there is a big pilgrimage to Pandharpur. Fasting is observed on this day all over Maharashtra.Food offerings are made to the deity. Bhajans and kirtans are performed in village temples. This is a very important festival for the saint sect of Maharashtra. It is a uniquely important festival in the cultural tradition of Maharashtra which has reached the grassroots. Warkaris play different games in the temple passage.
