English: Chapter II.-FEATHERBONE. FEATHERBONE has been invented. "FEATHERBONE?" Perhaps you've seen the name somewhere in the advertising pages of your favorite monthly, and wondered what it is like, and what it is used for. That's precisely what this little book is intended to tell you. Seventy - five miles east from Chicago, upon the line of the Michigan Central Railway, in the State of Michigan, close beside the Indiana State line, is the little village of Three Oaks. It has a single industry. What shoes are to Lynn, FEATHERBONE is to Three Oaks. FEATHERBONE, in its completed state, is simply both a substitute for, and an improvement upon, whalebone. The rapid development of the industry since its first inception by Mr. E. K. Warren, six years ago, has not exceeded, indeed cannot keep pace with the steadily increasing d e m and for FEATHERBONE, for use as dress-stays and in corsets. With the single exception of the manufacture of whips (by the Warren Featherbone Whip Company) its present use is confined .to these two purposes, although there is no doubt that it will be eventually employed in.scores of widely diverse articles requiring a reliable, elastic, non-breakable, porous material. |
