Wartburg war der Handelsname der von 1956 bis 1991 im VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach gefertigten Personenkraftwagen-Baureihe des Herstellers IFA. Der Name leitet sich von der gleichnamigen Burg am Produktionsstandort Eisenach ab.

Der ab 1956 produzierte Wartburg 311 wurde aus dem IFA F9, welcher auf das 1940 entwickelte Modell DKW F9 der Auto Union zurückging, weiterentwickelt: Der Rahmen des aus Zwickau zwangsübernommenen Wagens wurde um zehn Zentimeter verlängert und erhielt eine deutlich größere und viertürige Karosserie. Als Handelsnamen wählte man den Namen des ersten 1898 produzierten Motorwagens der Eisenacher Fahrzeugwerke. Die Bezeichnung 311 steht ebenso wie die folgenden (313, 312, 353 und Prototypen) in BMW-Tradition – alle in Eisenach hergestellten BMWs und EMWs hatten dreistellige Nummern, die sämtlich mit einer „3“ begannen; der F9 wurde in Eisenach als „309“ geführt.

Der Wartburg 311 konnte wegen seiner Rahmenbauweise relativ problemlos in verschiedenen Karosserieausführungen hergestellt werden.

The Wartburg 311 was a car produced by East German car manufacturer VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach from 1956 to 1965. The 311 model was manufactured in a number of variations, including pickup, sedan, limousine, coupe, and as a two-seater roadster. The engine was enlarged to 992cc in 1962. Exports of the Wartburg 311 to West Germany started in 1958, and by the early 1960s the car was exported to many other countries, including the United Kingdom and United States.
