DescriptionWartime aircraft crash site - geograph.org.uk - 463118.jpg |
English: Wartime aircraft crash site High on the western slope of Carn Bica a bare patch marks the spot where on the night of September 19th 1944 a Liberator GR VI aircraft came down, killing 6 of the crew and injuring 3. It was based at St Eval in Cornwall. The crew, all or mostly Canadian, had just completed a substantial amount of flying time when, at short notice, they were scrambled to test out some experimental lighting equipment on the plane. In the dark the pilot hit the mountainside just a few feet short of the summit.
Thanks to local aviation enthusiasts, the site has marked by a plaque giving the names of the aircraftmen. The 3 survivors attended a memorial event locally in 1984. [GR as given in the booklet 'Stories in Stone' by Anthony Bailey, Preseli Heritage Publications, 2000] |
