On June 21, 2017 U.S. officials testified in Congress that the threat Russia posed to the 2016 vote for the White House included efforts to hack into election systems in 21 states and to fill the internet with misinformation during a divisive campaign seas. Mistrust between State and Federal officials meant few counter measures took place. www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-homeland-secur... "In 2018 politicians will be reminded where sovereign power truly lies in a democracy: with Facebook. As attention and advertising money have moved online, the mighty social network has assumed an outsized role in elections. The company’s own marketing pages make the case that paid ads can shift voter sentiment, and its algorithms help people stay informed about candidates and their positions—regardless of whether any of it is true. "Nothing has served as better advertising for Facebook’s powers than the controversy surrounding Russian interference in America’s presidential election. In 2018 lobbyists, political operatives and interested foreign governments will learn from Russia’s methods and adopt them in elections from Mexico to Mali."
