Washington's Headquarters, a national historic landmark near Valley Forge, PA (c. 1773). It was built for Isaac Potts, who owned a local grist mill and saw mill. Potts lent the house to widow Deborah Hewes in 1777, who in turn sublet it to Washington. Martha Washington also lived here during the later months of the encampment. The house was also the administrative center of the encampment, and other generals would sometimes stay in the attic. The house remained in private hands until the 1870s. The Centennial & Memorial Association was formed to purchase the house for the 100th anniversary of the encampment to preserve it as a memorial. It was transferred to the state in 1905. Following the loss at the Battle of Brandywine, Washington led the American army to the north. Washington sought a safe location to camp for the winter stragically located near Philadelphia. He selected Valley Forge, a small community based around an iron forge. Over the next six weeks, the 12,000 Continental soldiers established a large settlement |
