| Description |
English: While sitting next to a pond in the forest this afternoon, I noticed a Bembix wasp hovering not far away. On the ground was a wingless female Red Velvet Ant waving its abdomen in the air pointing toward the incoming wasp.
On the Brisbane Insects website I learned new information for me. The wingless females wave their abdomen in the air, releasing pheremones and mate when the male visits. I guess my first impressions of a standoff were wrong and the velvet ant wasp female was hoping for a visit from a male. The Bembix wasp landed, scratched in the sand and disappeared down a hole in a second. The Red Velvet Ant lowered her abdomen and wandered around checking out the crevices in the sand. |
