From War Department Corps of Engineers 'Survey of Northern and Northwestern Lakes' 1914 Bulletin No. 23, "Located 1,400 feet from the shore line [...at...] Lake View pumping station (which is on the lake front at the foot of Montrose Boulevard, about 5 miles north of the mouth of Chicago River),... in about 14 feet of water, is Lawrence Avenue Intake Crib, about 150 feet in diameter and rising about 22 feet above water level; it carries on a post a fixed red light visible about 7 miles."
