Summary
editDescriptionWave Hill - 20220616 - 10 - pathway outside Glyndor.jpg |
English: With a steep hill at its outer edge, a gravel-paved pathway clings to the south wall of the Glyndor Mansion, as seen on a June 2022 visit to the Wave Hill Public Garden. One of two historic homes located within this expertly manicured 28-acre expanse, Glyndor is a sprawling Colonial Revival-style beauty designed by the firm of Butler & Corse and built in 1927 on the foundation of an earlier home that was lost to fire. The property's original owner was George Walbridge Perkins (1862-1920), a towering figure in local financial spheres who occupied executive posts in the New York Life Insurance Company and with J. P. Morgan. His widow Evelina - at the suggestion of Robert Moses, who was then serving as commissioner of the New York City Parks Department and chairman of the New York State Council of Parks - donated the property to the city upon her death in 1960, and along with the grounds of the adjacent Wave Hill House, it was opened to visitors five years later as a public garden and arboretum. Glyndor in particular is now used as an art gallery. |
