English: The Wave Hill House, as seen in June 2022. This namesake house is the older of the two on the Wave Hill property: the original portion dates to 1844 and was built as the home of prominent attorney William Lewis Morris (1804-1864). Comprising the bottom two stories as seen here, it was designed in the Greek Revival style by an architect whose identity is unknown but who was obviously influenced by the work of Minard Lefever. Witness the sumptuous Classical detailing adorning the gray fieldstone façade: a cornice at the roofline undergirded by brackets alternating with paterae and garland reliefs on the entablature, cut-stone lintels crowning the windows, and, foremost, an elegant entrance wherein a pair of engaged Corinthian columns support a segmental pediment centered on a shell ornament. Repeated additions to the house over the years (the earliest being the mansard roof added in 1866 by subsequent owner William Henry Appleton) have each added distinct stylistic flavors while maintaining a pleasant harmony vis-à-vis the whole. The house was acquired in 1903 by George W. Perkins, who already owned the neighboring Glyndor Mansion. Perkins used Wave Hill as a guest house; its lodgers and short-term residents have included such prominent names as Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, Arturo Toscanini, and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Today, it serves as event and classroom space as well as housing the onsite café.
