Summary edit
DescriptionWednesfield Mural - Bealeys Fold - geograph.org.uk - 1572142.jpg |
English: Wednesfield Mural - Bealeys Fold The mural by local schools dates from the redevelopment of the village High Street in the 1960s.
Wednesfield is mentioned in the Anglo Saxon chronicles and the Domesday Book. The village was the site of the Battle of Wodensfelde where Edward the Elder, King of Mercia, defeated a Danish army and brought peace. It remained essentially a rural community until the industrial revolution when the village rose to dominate manufacture of animal and man-traps. The Wyrley and Essington Canal reached the village in the 1790s. Industry moved into the area in the 19th century with the coming of the railway to Heath Town. The population surged in the 1960s as neighbouring Wolverhampton built large council estates and schools. The Urban District Council was absorbed into Wolverhampton in 1967. Most of the industry has now disappeared and some of the derelict sites used for a shopping centre. |
