Von besonderem Interesse ist der auf dem Naturschutzgebiet Weihertalkopf (bei Nünschweiler,Südwestpfalz) gelegene Steinbruch "Bruch Schütz", da es sich hierbei um den besten Aufschluss im unteren Muschelkalk der Südwestpfalz handelt....Vor etwa 240 Millionen Jahren überflutete dann das Muschelkalkmeer von Nordosten her den gesamten süddeutschen Raum.Die Gesteine die wir heute im Bruch Schütz aufgeschlossen finden,entstanden damals unter subtropisch-tropischen Bedingungen, in einem sehr flachen randmarinen Meer.

Der Steinbruch wurde laut Überlieferung schon von den Römern genutzt.Heute bietet er für einige selten gewordene Tierarten und Pflanzen einen geschützten Lebensraum.
