Description
English: Wells: Penniless Porch This gateway stands on the northeast corner of the marketplace and gives access to the cathedral grounds. It was built by Bishop Thomas Beckington around 1450 and gets its name, apparently, because the beggars who took shelter on the bench midway through the arch. The gentleman on the bench is just affixing a British Legion poppy to his lapel: see 1554587.
