Summary

edit
Description
English: West Front, Buckfast Abbey. Although it looks like a Norman building, the Abbey church was actually built between 1907 and 1932. However it was built on the site of an earlier abbey, founded in 1018, and demolished after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the reign of Henry VIII. The abbey was closed in 1539. It is the only English medieval monastery to have been restored and used again for its original purpose, and is home to a community of Benedictine monks. The picture was taken in the sunlight of a late afternoon in August which shows up the colours of the stonework.
