Description

Police officers and members of the public have been honoured for acts of bravery and selflessness in the annual West Midlands Police awards ceremony.

More than 30 accolades were presented at the event on Wednesday night (Sept 19) in recognition of outstanding contributions to tackling crime, life-saving first aid, and heroic interventions from members of the public.

Two Birmingham PCs have received a prestigious Chief Constable's Award for their role in chasing down an armed robber and recovering a stash of hidden jewellery valued at £750,000.

Acting Inspector Matt Minton and Sergeant Chris Wilkins were part of the police team responding to reports of an armed robbery at a jewellery shop in Handsworth on 1 February this year.

A significant amount of jewellery had been stolen during the raid after masked men burst into the property and threatened staff with firearms; the men fled the scene seconds before officers arrived. Inspector Minton and Sergeant Wilkins led a large scale search of the area when they heard noises coming from undergrowth near a railway embankment.

Both officers, without fear of their own safety, proceeded to climb several fences to investigate the noise and thanks to their bravery, a man hiding in bushes was detained and arrested.

The officers later returned to the scene to conduct a further search of and uncovered a holdall that had been concealed by the robber and found it to contain jewellery valued at three-quarters of a million pounds!

And in August two men, aged 21 and 23, received a combined custodial sentence of eighteen and a half years for their involvement in this incident.

Commenting on the award, Birmingham West & Central Police Superintendent Richard Moore said: "Thanks to the alertness and professionalism shown by our brave officers, two dangerous men have been removed from the streets and £750,000 worth of Jewellery was recovered to its rightful owner."
