English: Built between 1926 and 1929, this Second Renaissance Revival-style building was designed by Garber & Woodward to serve the rapidly-growing west side of Cincinnati, which saw a massive amount of construction and population growth during the 1920s. The school continued to grow into the 1930s, necessitating the addition of more rooms onto the rear of the north and south wings in 1938, also designed by Garber & Woodward, with the further addition of a larger and less ornamented gymnasium to the rear some time after this. The buff brick building features limestone trim, a colonnade on the front facade over the front entrance on the second and third floors, framing the windows of the school’s two-story library above on the second and third floors, which features decoratively painted ceiling beams, a balcony, and decorative chandeliers. The main entry doors on the front facade have arched transoms above, inset into the middle of the limestone base below the colonnade, with the lobby inside the doors featuring beautiful murals painted in 1931. The rear wing behind the library and front entrance house’s the auditorium on the first and second floors, and a cafeteria above on the fourth floor. The wings flanking the central wing of the building to the north and south contain classrooms, with a large gymnasium in the south rear wing. The building was further extended with a vocational school to the rear in the 1970s, which has since become home to Dater High School. In 2009, the building underwent a rehabilitation that saw the major original spaces in the central wing and the exterior restored, with the building’s systems, flooring, and other elements fully modernized. The building today serves as Western Hills University High School, which focuses on college preparation for students, including teacher teams working with students for a year or longer to ensure their academic success. |
