Description |
English: The Western Steel Company opened in 1901, on the site of the old Puget Sound Iron Company at Irondale, just south of Port Townsend, Washington. By 1909, the plant was producing 700 tons of steel per week and shipping it to ports from Alaska to California. In 1911, major economic problems elsewhere in the steel industry caused the shutdown of Western Steel, and Irondale's brief boom ended.
This 1910 photo, one half of a larger panorama, shows the Western Steel Company works during its most prosperous times. Piles of scrap iron wait on the shore and on nearby barges. The scrap will be used in the production of new steel. An artist has enhanced the clouds of smoke above the smokestacks. Before it was associated with air pollution, billowing factory smoke was a sure sign of prosperity.
