  • Significance: The Westernport School later known as the Hammond Street School is significant for its role in the education of generations of children from southwestern Allegany County and southeastern Garrett County during the period from 1891 to 1958. Early references to the school refer to it as the Westernport Public School, showing it to be distinctive as the principal public educational facility for Westernport and the surrounding area.
