Description
English: Picture of the front of Westinghouse High School located at 1101 North Murtland Street in the Homewood West neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on December 12, 2009. The school was built in 1917 to honor George Westinghouse, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Architects: Ingham & Boyd. Architectural style: Classical Revival.

The historical marker near the front of the building says the following: "William 'Billy' Strayhorn (1915-1967) - Jazz composer and arranger. Collaborator with Duke Ellington. Billy Strayhorn's "Take the A Train" became the Ellington orchestra's theme song. A graduate of Westinghouse High School, Strayhorn had his musical talents nurtured here." Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission 2005.[1]

Other notable alumni of the school include: Erroll Garner (jazz pianist), Ahmad Jamal (jazz pianist), Frank Cunimondo (jazz pianist), and Maurice Stokes (NBA player in the Basketball Hall of Fame).
