DescriptionWhat a rush.JPG |
English: What a Rush!
On June 9th, 1909, the Emergency Swing Dam was called into action! On this day, the freighter Perry G. Walker crashed into the lock gates causing a rush of water from Lake Superior to flood into the canal. The force of the water was so strong it ripped two sets of lock gates out of the wall and carried them away. The Emergency Swing Dam was swung across the canal, greatly reducing the flow of water and enabling the workers to regain control of the situation. Boats hurled along by rushing wall of water and thrown out into the river - Headline from the Toronto Star, June 11th, 1909. Want to know the full story of the 1909 accident?
