Description
English: Wheal Coates Mine. This tin mine was operational in the late 19th century and was reopened for a while in the early 20th century. Down the cliffside on the right is the distinctive red chimney of the Towanroath pumping engine house which pumped water from the mine up to an adit which drained into Towanroath Vugga, a partly natural, partly artificial cave on the sea shore below ( 371855 ). Near the centre of the photograph is the engine house which housed the engine which powered the stamps. These pounded the ore to a powder to enable it to be concentrated. Tin ore (cassiterite) in Cornwall is found in small crystals spread throughout the mineral veins. When crushed it can be separated from the other less useful minerals, usually with the aid of water, to form "black tin" which was normally taken elsewhere to be smelted to tin itself (white tin). To the left of this big engine house is another engine house which looks by its shape that it housed a horizontally mounted engine. This was used to hoist the ore out of Towanroath shaft up to the stamps and dressing floors.
