Title
Wheat Stacks at Port Wakefield Cart Loaded With Sacks Horses Feeding
Description

Port Wakefield was ideally situated for exporting cereals from its hinterland and many farmers shipped wheat and other grains through the port. As early as 1887 narrow gauge (3 feet 6 inches [1.068 metres]) railways linked wheat-belt towns such as Blythe, Balaklava, Bute and Snowtown to Port Wakefield. Wheat was stacked until a ketch arrived to export the harvest. In 1909, 300,000 bags of wheat were exported from Port Wakefield.
