Summary
editDescriptionWhite-tailed Bumblebee (Bombus lucorum) - geograph.org.uk - 954103.jpg |
English: White-tailed Bumblebee (Bombus lucorum) The second commonest bumblebee in Shetland; the form found in Shetland is known as magnus and is now regarded as an upland ecotype (a form found in a particular habitat), although it is sometimes regarded as a subspecies. It can clearly be seen how the bumbelebees 'cheat' the non-native Fuchsia flowers. The bees do not have long enough tongues to reach the nectaries via the flower so they bite a hole to reach them. This means that the bees don't get covered in pollen and transport it from flower to flower, the real reason the flowers produce nectar to attract insects. |
