Summary edit

Description
English: Whitehaven: cannon This cannon on the harbourside is accompanied by a very detailed sculpture of an American raider spiking the gun during the American War of Independence. John Paul Jones was an American privateer who attacked British shipping in the Irish Sea with his ship Ranger during the American War of Independence. He had earlier served with the Royal Navy in Whitehaven and knew the town. He raided the harbour on April 17, 1778. This was the only attack on the British mainland by American forces in history. The figure is "spiking the gun", that is making it inoperable by hammering a metal spike into its fuse hole. With grateful thanks to Graham Hale for providing this information.
