Summary
editDescriptionWhitehaven smokehouse, Grand Island, New York - 20210811.jpg |
English: As seen in August 2021. On the property of the Radisson Hotel in Grand Island, New York, just past the east end of Whitehaven Road near the island's easternmost post, is this former smokehouse, a rough-hewn structure of irregularly coursed stone blocks built c. 1834 that is the only extant remnant of the Whitehaven Settlement, the first on the island to be established by European-Americans. Whitehaven was named for Stephen White, owner of the East Boston Timber Company who sought to exploit the island's famously enormous white oak trees for the construction of Yankee clipper ships, which would be built in Massachusetts of lumber expedited down the Erie Canal. The compound also included a church, a store, a school, a large mansion for the company's resident general agent, Jedediah Lathrop, and what was then the world's largest steam saw. The East Boston Company's demise was swift and abrupt: the most desirable trees on the island were all gone within a few years, and the persistently high rate of canal tolls caused the company to default on all of its loans by the end of the decade. New York State, which took possession of the land after the East Boston Company's bankruptcy, began selling plots in 1848 to the farmers who would be the island's first permanent white settlers. |
