Description

Herbert Whitfeld of Tenterden was descended from the Whitfelds of Northumberland, and was a justice of the Peace for Kent. His wife Martha, daughter of Robert Shephard of Peasmarsh. She died in January 1613 Herbert died February 1622. Herbert's grandfather Robert, moved from Cumberland to the Wadhurst iron works in 1491. His son, father of Herbert, moved to Tenterden where he was Bailiff in 1555.

The Monument displays 18 coats of arms, and was raised by Herbert's son Raphe, above the gravestone of his mother in accordance with his father's will.
