Photo of the entrance to the almshouses, from North End, Croydon.

§ Links to a short video (2014) about the history of the Whitgift Almshouses in Croydon. Posted on YouTube and also on the Whitgift Foundation website. The film is by Sam Gee and was narrated by Almshouses resident Margaret Dickens, script written by Almshouses resident David Gilbert. § The Latin text above the entrance is: "Qui dat pauperi non indigebit qui despicit deprecantem sustinebit penuria" Translated in the King James bible as:

"He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.
