Whitman College opened in 1882 on the campus of Whitman Seminary in Walla Walla. Under the leadership of presidents Alexander J. Anderson and Stephen Penrose, Whitman became a nationally-recognized liberal arts college.

Whitman College has four departments: Collegiate - including three course: classical, scientific, and literary. Academic - including three courses: college preparatory, normal and business. Music - Including two courses: voice and piano. Art - including a three years' course in painting and drawing. The institution has eleven professors and instructors, carefully selected, both for Christian character and for ability to do thorough work...In the past seven years, Whitman College has grown to be the leading institution of higher learning and secondary instruction in the Upper Columbia Valley, and in the thoroughness of its work it is not surpassed by any school or college on the North Pacific Coast.
