English: Seen in the background of this March 2015 northward view along Whitney Place on the West Side of Buffalo, New York is the former First Free Baptist Church on nearby Hudson Street. Erected in 1881 as the third (and first purpose-built) home of this congregation that takes its name from its decision to deviate from the common practice of charging fees to congregants for use of the church pews, the building's design - the work of an unknown architect - exemplifies the exuberant eclecticism of the Victorian Gothic style as practiced in the U.S. The church housed its founding congregation until demographic changes in the neighborhood (it came to comprise an Italian Catholic majority) prompted its closure in 1923; it's served as home to a revolving door of different flocks in the years since.
