Description
English: Whittington Lock, Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. The locks on this part of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal have three underwater "paddles" to let water into the lock from above: two ground paddles (one each side of the canal) and one large gate paddle actually set into the gate. In this photograph all three paddles are down, preventing water from filling the lock from above. Compare with this : 1025216 where all three paddles are up, and the water is cascading in.

For an ascending narrowboat in the lock, especially a boat of fifty feet and more in length, it is wise to open the ground paddles first, then the gate paddle when it is considered safe. Reversing this order can result in the boat being inundated from the front, as the water enters through the gate VERY fiercely. This lock raises the level by 9 feet 9 inches (2.9 metres).

Not all locks have a gate paddle in the top gate, though they are usual in the bottom mitre gates.
