English: Warm, windy conditions fanned a large wildfire in Kamchatka Krai, Russia in early June 2016. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's Terra satellite captured this true-color image on June 3.

Each red hotspot marks an area where the thermal bands on the MODIS instrument detected high temperatures. Such hotspots, when combined with smoke, are diagnostic for actively burning fire. The hotspots circle the edge of a large blackened area, a burn scar, where the fire has consumed the vegetation. Heavy smoke rises from the hotspots and pours across the Sea of Okhotsk.

The fire burns east of the coastal town of Ust-Kharyryuzovo and west of the Sredinnyy Mountain Range in the southwest section of the Kamchatka Peninsula. According to RIA Novosti the fire risk in Kamchatka warranted the ban of agricultural burns and fires in the forests of the region on May 1.
