Description
English: Wildfires have continued to burn throughout August and September across Argentina's Cordoba province with strong winds and an absence of rainfall fuelling the fires spread. The situation has worsened last week because, with winds changing their direction, new wildfires started in the area and old ones were reinforced. The wildfire crisis affecting the Cordoba province is only part of a current national emergency as in 2020 of number of wildfires affecting Argentina has increased by 158% when compared with the same period of 2019 (1st January – 29th September). As a consequence, a large smoke cloud has been detected on 30 September over Buenos Aires before moving towards the Atlantic Ocean. This false colour image, obtained on September 29 from the multispectral data of one of the Sentinel-2 satellites-, shows a large wildfire in the province of Cordoba which started on 25 September. It has burned about 32,500 ha at the date of the Sentinel-2 acquisition. The fire is really close to small villages and 150 firefighters have been sent on site to contain it and to assist the residents. The Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, that is composed of two twin satellites (Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2B), provides multispectral data over 13 different frequency bands, including the Short Wave InfraRed (SWIR) channels that allows to monitor and detect active wildfires with a maximum spatial resolution of 10 metres.
