Description
English: Wildflowers beside the bridleway, Monkton Deverill The bridleway takes walkers and riders from Hindon Road to Summerslade Down. The barley crop is rippening well and the summer flowers are glorious.

Common Poppies, sometimes called Field Poppies, are a very striking scarlet colour. They are often seen in great numbers in cornfields or on road verges.

Chicory is also known as Monk's Beard and Succory and is a member of the Aster family. The flowers of chicory are a sky blue in the mornings but fade from midday. Chicory produces good roots which can be dug, scraped, roasted and then ground as a coffee substitute. The rather bitter flavour can be neutralised by adding honey. In folklore, Chicory flowers are the eyes of a girl crying for her sweetheart's ship, which never returned.
