Summary edit

Description
English: The Willet-Haug House, 559 Crescent Avenue, Buffalo, New York, October 2020. Though it takes obvious inspiration from the Shingle style with its widely proportioned side-gable roof, ultimately the house serves as an example of Craftsman architecture: witness the robust triangular knee braces supporting the widely overhanging eaves on the side elevations as well as the shed roof over the side entrance, and the exposed rafter tails overhanging the dormer. Sadly, the Classical detailing (namely Doric pilaster strips interspersed between the windowpanes) on the dormer has been lost to subsequent renovations. 559 Crescent served first as the home of building contractor Lincoln Willet (1860-1928), but spent much longer under the ownership of George Haug (1874-1951), a longtime executive with the Buffalo Dry Dock Company who resided there from 1918 until his death, and whose widow Lillian continued living there until her own death two years later.
