DescriptionWilliam Birdwood on battleship.jpg |
English: Lieutenant-General Sir William Birdwood, commander of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), aboard HMS Cornwallis during the Battle of Gallipoli, 1915. Birdwood was based on the ship after he took over command from Sir Ian Hamilton.
The scroll to the right of Birdwood reads "Blockade of Brest" which identifies HMS Cornwallis (after Admiral Sir William Cornwallis who commanded the Channel Fleet's blockade of Brest during the Napoleonic Wars). The battleship in the background appears to be HMS Swiftsure. |
