William Harbaugh White (1859-?) was born in Pennsylvania, one of six children in a family of Scotch-Irish descent. His father was a judge. He followed in his father's footsteps and studied law, practicing first in Pennsylvania, where he also served on the state legislature, and then moved to Seattle and practiced law with the firm Pratt & White. In 1887 he married Kate Erwin with whom he had three daughters.
