English: Senior U.S. Department of Defense officials and officers witness "Operation Portrex" D-Day maneuvers, 8 March 1950. Front row (left to right): Major General William C. Chase, U.S. Army; Secretary of the Navy Francis P. Matthews; Lieutenant General W.H.H. Morris, U.S. Army; Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson; and Admiral Forrest P. Sherman, USN, Chief of Naval Operations. The objective of "operation Portrex" (for Puerto Rico Exercise) was to see how the combined forces of the U.S. Army, Marines, Navy, and Air Force would do as "liberators" of an enemy captured territory (Vieques) against the "aggressors". |
