Description
English: Watercolor, bodycolor, and gum arabic on paper

10 1/2 X 15 3/4 in.; 26.7 X 40 cm. Signed, lo.r., W. HUNT

This is one of three watercolors of dead pigeons which were included by John Ruskin in his 1879-80 exhibition of works by Samuel Prout and William Hunt. The first example is now in the Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museum in Scotland, while the location of the third, then owned by Ruskin himself, is currently untraced. This was the second of the exhibited woatercolors, and it was originally owned by Hunt's personal physician, Dr. Robert Wade. This work, along with the Still Life of a Pineapple and Three Plums, both of which are unusually large for late watercolors by the artist, were singled out for praise by reviewers of the 1861 Spring Exhibition of the Society of Painters in Water-colours.
