| Description |
English: The William Hewson House, 873 Abbott Road, Buffalo, November 2019. A native of Woodside, England, William Hewson (1807-1880) came to Buffalo in 1847 and was one of the first white settlers in what is now South Buffalo after the dissolution of the Buffalo Creek Reservation five years earlier; his house, in the Italianate Villa style, would have been built not long after. Hewson owned a large tract of farmland on the west side of Abbott Road extending from what's today Coolidge Road to the site of School 67. In his last years, he donated part of his estate for the construction of Woodside Methodist Episcopal Church. The building has housed Castiglia Funeral Home since 1957. |
