Image title | Nurse Williamina Barclay was the last nurse to be sent to St Kilda (in 1927). It was largely due to her efforts that the islanders finally agreed to abandoned their island home. For this she was later awarded the CBE. IMAGINE discovering a lost tribe, but instead of them being deep in the heart of South America Ð they were on a small island off the coast of BRITAIN. These nineteenth-century pictures reveal the people of St Kilda, a remote island community some 40 miles west of the Outer Hebrides Ð whose untouched way of life dated back to the bronze age. The self-sufficient St Kildans became a tourist attraction in late Victorian times Ð as intrepid sightseers made the rough crossing from the mainland to gawp and marvel at their isolation. St Kilda had existed for centuries alone but the increased outside contact through tourism brought previously unknown and fatal illnesses to the island and made native inhabitants curious about the world beyond. These changes made to the island by visitors in the 19th century disconnected the St Kildans from their age-old way of life. And on 29 August 1930, the remaining 26 inhabitants of St Kilda were evacuated off the island Ð never to return. The last of the native St Kildans, Rachel Johnson, died in April 2016 at the age of 93 Ð having been evacuated at the age of 8. ... SEE COPY ... PIC BY NEWS DOG MEDIA ... 0121 517 0019 |
