Dipinto di grande successo dell’autore poco più che trentenne, è noto come Il mezzaro, termine usato per definire un grande scialle decorato a motivi floreali, tipicamente genovese, usato sia in abbigliamento che in arredamento.

La morbidezza con cui viene resa la stoffa, la precisione della resa pittorica dei motivi del mezzaro, la tavolozza precisa e ricca, danno risalto alla lettura introspettiva della pensierosa ragazzina che con un gesto semplice coinvolge e cattura l’attenzione dello spettatore. La costruttività disegnativa e la complessità con cui l’autore disegna le mani che si appoggiano alle pieghe del mezzaro racchiudendolo come scialle, mette in risalto il virtuosismo pittorico e la sensibilità dell’artista. L’opera appartiene al periodo verista giovanile, prima del suo incarico come professore all’Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti nel 1893. Giovanni Grasso, citando questa opera nel catalogo della mostra di Alessandria, la inserisce nella produzione delle opere di Viazzi “venate da una serie di allusioni e complessi rimandi culturali che finiscono con il distaccarle fortemente dai consueti schemi reali e brutali di tanta arte ottocentesca”.
