Description |
Portrait known in the Royal Collection of the UK as "Catherine II, Empress of Russia (1729-1796)" according to the inscription on its parapet. But please note the 1740-1750s style of painting and dressing - besides the too big age of the sitter and the absence of similarity with the known portraits of Catherine II in such years. There is the engraved portrait of her mother Johanna Elisabeth of Holstein-Gottorp (1712-1760), made by Johann Martin Bernigeroth in 1756 after the Anna Rosina de Gasc's portrait painting, which is too similar to this oil image. Anna Rosina de Gasc (nee Lisiewski) also painted Catherine II's portrait in 1742. |
