editDescriptionWomen embroidering - Textile Work (1915 by Elstner Hilton).jpg |
My spouse's uncle Elstner Hilton took this photo in Japan between 1914 and 1918. I can't quite make out what sort of work this woman is performing. On the left, it appears the threads have been drawn together to create open spaces. There's a name for this that escapes me. But where the woman is working, there's a skein of thread, and she appears to be pulling thread through the fabric, both of which would be more consistent with embroidery - unless the thread is being used to pull threads in the fabric together to make open spaces. |
