Description

Lieutenant (Retired) Tirthabdr Thaba, an Area Welfare Coordinator for the Gurkha Welfare Scheme in Nepal's Gorkha District, pictured talking to a team of DFID humanitarian advisers. The Gurkha Welfare Scheme is supported by UK aid from the Department for International Development.

"After the earthquake struck, we immediately deployed teams of ex-Gurkha soldiers to some of the remotest areas", says Lt. Thaba.

"The Gurkha Welfare Scheme exists to support former Gurkha soldiers and their families in Nepal. So we're getting aid to them, but also helping to assess the roads and damage to infrastructure, and passing this information to the international relief effort".

There are seven Village Development Committees (VDCs)* in Gorkha district that take 6 days to reach from Gorkha town itself - 1 day's drive and then 5 days on foot. The former Gurkha soldiers are uniquely placed to access these remote communities, as they have expert local knowledge of the inaccessible terrain.

  • VDCs are the smallest areas of local government in Nepal. Each VDC is made up of 9 wards and each ward might include a number of villages.
