This is a world map of cumulative energy-related carbon dioxide emissions, 1850-2005 (see greenhouse gas). The darker the color, the larger the emissions. The map is based on data from the World Bank (2010). Circled and hatched areas indicate that no emissions data was available from the source. The top-5 emitters (in billion tons of carbon dioxide) over this time period were the United States (324.9), Germany (117.8), China (94.3), Russia (92.5), the United Kingdom (68.1). The top-20 emitters over this time period accounted for almost 85% of total world emissions. The map shows that industrialized countries have emitted the greatest share of total world emissions, while less developed countries have emitted a lower share of total world emissions.
