| Description |
English: Westbound coal train on Worsborough Branch. View eastward, towards Wath, on the ex-Great Central Aldam Junction - West Silkstone Junction (Barnsley avoiding) line, a goods-only line embracing the infamous Worsborough Incline (3 miles at 1-in-40). All westbound trains required to be banked and this heavy coal train bound for the Woodhead line to Manchester had two ex-War Department 2-8-0s (Nos. 90190 + 79242) at the front and as well another 2-8-0 plus a J11 0-6-0 at the rear; the train is nearing Silkstone No. 1 Tunnel. In 1950 it would not be long before the line was electrified, along with the whole route from Sheffield via Woodhead to Manchester, but for about 30 years this once dramatic railway has been just a dedicated cycle-way - and the M1 crosses it a mile to the east of this spot. |
